IMLI RICE (PULIYOGARE RICE)

A single dish meal, a typical rice dish from Karnataka, or can also be linked with Tamil Nadu (the state from South India). There is no patent for this recipe, basically, a dish from South India, when it is in front of you all it matters is its taste, who cares where it has originated from? A sweet and tangy, this rice preparation can be eaten for either lunch or dinner. Rice lovers also like to carry this dish in lunch boxes for work, picnic or even overnight travel. Children also like to carry this rice dish to school.

A perfect balance of hot, sweet, and tanginess makes this dish unique, one can eat this rice alone without anything else to accompany with. Can be eaten hot or cold. Particularly the masala in this rice can be stored in the refrigerator for months, to reduce the work time.


INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups rice (uncooked)

  • 30 gms Tamarind

  • ¼ cup Jaggery

For Masala

  • 1 Tablespoon Coriander Seeds

  • 1 Tablespoon Cumin seeds

  • 2 Tablespoon Sesame seeds

  • 1 Tablespoon Urad Dal( Black gram dal)

  • 1 Tablespoon Chana Dal( Gram Dal)

  • 5 - 6 Dry Red Chili

  • ½ teaspoon Pepper Corns

  • ½ teaspoon Fenugreek seeds

  • ½ cup grated dry coconut

Tadka

  • ½ cup veg oil

  • ½ teaspoon mustard seeds

  • ½ teaspoon Hing (Asafoetida)

  • ½ teaspoon Turmeric powder

  • ½ cup peanuts

  • 10 - 15 curry leaves

  • 3 small red chilies

  • 1/2 Tablespoon salt

  • 1/2 cup fresh grated coconut for garnishing
